Students in Life Sciences Communications 515 partnered with Union South to reduce contamination in the building’s waste stream. Student teams created social marketing campaigns aimed at improving recycling and composting among Union customers.
Transforma, winners of the Global Stewards Sustainability Prize, devised a strategy to engage unemployed women in Costa Rica in transforming plastic waste into sellable products. Pathogenomica, winners of the Dvorak Energy Prize, are applying DNA sequencing technology to detect pathogens in food and beverages.
Two UW–Madison students embarked on a summer adventure to teach the concepts of climate change and local, sustainable and healthy eating to children visiting Milwaukee’s Urban Ecology Center. They found their efforts, supported by a Wisconsin Open Education Community Fellowship, challenging but critically important to children in an area that is primarily a food desert.
UW–Madison has committed to improving democratic engagement, increasing student voter participation rates and graduating students with a lifelong commitment to being informed and active citizens.
