Angela Pakes Ahlman is the Technical Director for two research centers of excellence at the University of Wisconsin – Madison: the Wisconsin Highway Research Program and the Recycled Materials Resource Center. Angela also is a Professor of Practice, but prior to her role in the College of Engineering, Angela was a lead Project Manager and Engineer for the UW-Madison Capital Planning & Development where she led several projects on campus involving the sustainable planning, design and construction and/or renovation of notable campus buildings such as the Education Building, the School of Human Ecology, the new Union South, and Memorial Union. Angela is a LEED Accredited Professional and specializes in sustainable planning, design and construction practices. Prior to working at UW-Madison, Angela started an environmental engineering consulting practice in Michigan to promote sustainable engineering solutions for the automotive industry. She was later recruited to work at Ford Motor Company, where she became an Engineering Manager. While working at Ford, Angela led a multitude of environmental remediation, construction, and brownfield development projects in South America, Canada, and the United States. Angela graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with two BSE degrees in Geological Engineering and Geology and Geophysics, and went on to earn her MSE in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan. Angela holds a Professional Engineering license in both Wisconsin and Michigan.

Dr. Craig Benson is a Wisconsin Distinguished Professor that serves as the Director of the Office of Sustainability for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also the Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geological Engineering Departments. Additionally, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Over the past three decades, Dr. Benson has conducted several experimental and analytical research projects in geoenvironmental engineering. These projects focused on environmental containment of solid, hazardous, radioactive, and mining wastes; sustainable infrastructure; and beneficial use of industrial byproducts. Dr. Benson formerly served as the President of ASCE Geo-Institute as well as the Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock. Dr. Benson graduated with a BS from Lehigh University and MSE and PhD degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Steve Loheide is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He leads research on campus associated with science and engineering aspects of movement of water through the environment with regard to the complex and fluctuating interactions of water needed for municipal and agricultural uses, as well as for natural ecosystems. He has a wide range of research interests, including hydroecology, hydrogeology, river restoration, remote sensing, and sustainable land-use practices, to name a few. Prior to working at UW-Madison, Dr. Loheide worked as a Research Assistant at the Department of Geological and Environmental Science at Stanford University. He also worked at Exxon-Mobil Upstream Research Company. Dr. Loheide graduated with an undergraduate degree in Geology and Environmental Chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa. He has earned a Masters degree in Geology from Indiana University and a PhD in Hydrogeology from Stanford University.

Shuke Miao was born and raised in China, graduated from the top engineering school in China, and worked for Chinese construction companies prior to moving to the U. S. for his post graduate education. Since joining Mortenson in the U. S. in late 1994, Shuke grew his career from field engineer to project manager to company executive overseeing Mortenson projects in Los Angeles. In 2005, Shuke returned to China with Mortenson, and since then, has been running Mortenson China operation with the sole mission of providing world-class quality services to Mortenson customers in China.

Michelle Bai is the manager of the Global Energy Solutions team within Johnson Controls. She joined the Johnson Controls Building Efficiency business to provide solutions to global and local clients. She is an expert in the fields of energy management, green buildings projects, LEED certification, and wind power energy management. She is currently in charge of developing and supporting business growth in the region and executing the market plans. Michelle is also an “Institute for Building Experience China” expert. She has a great amount of expertise in the areas of policy and international building energy management.

Dave Misky is the Assistant Executive Director of the Redevelopment Authority for the City of Milwaukee (RACM). In this position, he leads day-to-day operations of RACM’s economic development activities in neighborhoods throughout Milwaukee with strategies and methods like clean-up, renewal of properties, use of financing tools, and land acquisition. Prior to working for the City of Milwaukee, Dave served as the Development and Environmental Manager for the Department of City Development. Dave also has 15 years of experience in real estate development with a strong focus on creative financing and environmental issues. Dave earned a B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as well as an M.S. degree in Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Colin Rohlfing is a Sustainable Leader and Director of sustainable consulting and operations for Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum Inc. (HOK). For the past 10 years, he worked for local, regional, and firm-wide HOK project teams to facilitate sustainable and consulting integration for various projects throughout the firm. Colin is a member of the USGBC Illinois Chapter, Co-Facilitator of the Chicago Biomimicry Group, member of the AIA National Health and Sustainability Advisory Board and is a frequent speaker at various sustainability events throughout the world. He has presented at over 60 events both nationally and internationally. In 2010, he was awarded the Midwest Construction’s Top 20 under 40 honor and received an American Institute of Presidents citation for his work on the 2030 Challenge in Chicago. In 2012 he was awarded the Building Design and Construction Top 40 under 40 award and the Design Futures Council Top 40 under 40 award. Colin has experience with various green rating systems, including the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System, various LEED rating systems in India and the Middle East, BREEAM, Green Seal and Estidama. Some of his notable projects include: King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, the world’s largest LEED Platinum project and Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the world’s largest LEED NC Platinum project. Colin oversees the execution of sustainable consulting for HOK clients, which includes green work place solutions, sustainable operation plans, Greenhouse Gas emissions benchmarking and mitigation, GRI reporting, ISO certification, occupant engagement and behavioral programs and broader sustainability planning for campuses, cities, municipalities, and real estate portfolios. Colin works with public and private sector clients on commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, aviation facilities, courthouses, higher education, technology, and retail.

Nellie Cheng has followed a distinguished path of public service in Canada and the United States for more than 25 years and has established a track record in delivering successful projects in Asian markets. She is presently working with the World Green Building Council and the US Green Building Council. Before joining USGBC in 2010, she was Economic Development Director at the City of Prince Rupert in the Province of British Colombia, Canada. Previously, Nellie was with the Vancouver Economic Development Commission. She was in charge of investment attraction and business development. Nellie also served as Senior Trade Consultant at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), promoting Canadian Healthy Housing and Sustainable Communities in the China market. Working with Chinese developers, her team has implemented Canadian Super E Healthy Housing and Canadian Sustainable Community projects in Shanghai and Beijing. Nellie has been frequently invited to present Canadian expertise in these areas at conferences and workshops in many Chinese cities. At CMHC, Nellie also took the role of Project Manager at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was responsible for coordinating Sustainable and Green Building initiatives related to 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Nellie’s professional engagement also includes Manager, Greater China with the Government of British Columbia and Director, East Asia with the Government of Washington State. Nellie served on the Board of World Green Building Council for 6 years, four years as Treasurer and two years as Secretary. She has played a pivotal role in working with groups in China to establish the China Green Building Council. She received the first World GBC Chairman’s award in 2011 in recognition of her significant contribution to the global green building movement. Nellie is currently a member of the City of Vancouver’s Multicultural Advisory Committee. Nellie obtained her Master Degree in Communication Studies from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and Executive Management Diploma from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. For our June Shanghai Workshop, Nellie will be talking about The Business Case for Green Buildings-The Costs and Benefits to discuss how green building helps create a built environment that will give people better, brighter, healthier spaces to live, work and play, and at the same time brings benefits to the developers and property owners.

Dr. Kevin Chen, an Urban Designer and Registered Architect, is a Senior Associate and Regional Leader of Planning at HOK China, a global architectural firm that specializes in planning, landscape architecture, design and delivery solutions for buildings and communities since 1955. Kevin Chen has over 25 years of experience in the urban construction field from city scale planning to architectural design. Educated and trained in both China and the UK, Kevin has extensive professional, academic and living experience from UK, HK, Australia and China. As an all-rounder designer, Kevin understands the cultural difference in between the eastern and western societies. Also, Kevin has rich project experience in a wide range of urban design, architectural design, and research projects internationally in Australia, China, HK, Japan, and the Middle East. Project type including master plan, urban design, mixed-use, retail, commercial, tourism, and leisure entertainment. Currently, Kevin serves as Regional Leader of Planning for HOK in China.

Dr. Longpeng Cui is a Professor of Environmental Science, acting director of Coal Conservation R&D Department, and former director of Industrial Waste and Wastewater Management in Environmental Service Centre, SINOPEC. He specializes in safety disposal and integrated utilization of industrial and hazardous wastes and industrial By-Product Synergy (BPS) projects and the investigation and risk assessment of contaminated sites in mining and energy industries. He received a B.S. in Coal Geology Engineering and a M.S. in Applied Clay Mineralogy from Anhui University of Science and Technology, a P.D.C in Environmental Engineering from Tsinghua University, and a Ph.D in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen (UK). Dr. Cui conducted over thirty projects within the energy and mining industries in China, the United Kingdom, and Canada, with over 25 years of professional experience in academic research, teaching and consulting. He has published over forty scientific papers in the areas of geochemistry, environmental chemistry, environmental impact and ecological risk assessments of industrial waste and contaminated sites. He is working on the BPS program, which was initiated by the CBCSD and US-BCSD under the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue’s EcoPartnership in May 2012, and including a Hebei BPS Project and a BPS Project in Anhui Contemporary Coal Chemical Industrial Park in China.

Jianqing Ruan is currently the main planner for Shanghai first green building technology incubators. He is responsible for the overall strategic technology incubator program, working with the US Green Building Council, Swedish National Innovation Agency and Shanghai Institute of Architects as well as other agencies to carry out cooperation projects, including green building and clean energy education, project introduction, testing, investment and service work. He has attracted investment of nearly 400 million CYN, 3rd state-level high-tech enterprise, Shanghai’s largest green building company settlement, and attracted hundreds of energy-saving environmental protection enterprises. He served as project manager while working at China Academy of Building Research Shanghai Branch Green Building and Eco-City Center, worked in green building and eco-city research center department and focused on green building research. He has completed more than ten green building consulting projects and participated in more than 50 green building projects, three of which are research projects. He also published eight papers on the research and participated in the book edition of “Shanghai Green Building Achievements Set,” “China Green Building 2012.” The project titled “Large-Scale Residential Communities Jiang Qiaoji ground” won the third prize of the China Green Building Innovation Award.

Additionally, he has 5 years of experience in window film, covering front line technical support, industry, national and regional codes compiling. He has also published 6 papers and 3 patents in recent years .

Chris Fannin has over 25 years of experience in planning and urban design projects, as well as landscape architecture, encompassing a broad range of project types internationally. From large-scale land use and master planning to implementation and detailed construction, Chris has focused on bringing legible form to complex ecological, social and programmatic processes through elegant sustainable systems and material deployment. After a number of years as an educator and practitioner Chris joined HOK as Group Leader of the Planning Group in London before leading Planning in the St. Louis office. Currently Chris is the Director of HOK Planning Group Asia Pacific and the global co-leader of Planning for HOK. He is a member of the Board of Directors for HOK as well as serves on the firm-wide Design Board and the Management Board.
