12:00 – 1:30 pm – Solar Agriculture Networking and Info Session
Deluca Forum, Discovery Building + streaming webinar
UW–Madison is working with Alliant Energy and Sunvest Solar to propose a small-scale (2.25MW) solar and agricultural research farm to be located at the Kegonsa Research Campus near the Physical Sciences Lab outside of Stoughton, WI. This event will be an informational and networking event about the proposed solar project, and will also serve as a kick-off for interested faculty, students, and others who may be interested in research or learning opportunities connecting renewable energy and agricultural research. Light refreshments will be provided.

2:00 – 4:00 pm – Plant Adoption with Allen Centennial Gardens
East Campus Mall
Head to Library Mall to adopt your new plant friend. Back by popular demand, the Office of Sustainability and Allen Centennial Gardens will be giving away over 150 FREE house plants. Supplies are limited, so this event is first come first served.

With its 2022 Global Health Symposium, “Making Connections: Health, Climate & Equity,” the University of Wisconsin-Madison Global Health Institute (GHI) also marks its 10th anniversary.

The Food Recovery Network recovers food from the dining halls that would’ve been thrown out and serves it to the Madison community for free. Help us fight food waste by coming to our weekly meals!

Join Re-Wear it and Moda for this hands-on embroidery workshop. All supplies will be provided.

7:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Fossil Fuel Divestment: Climate Action or Climate Distraction?

Fossil fuel divestment is a hot topic on university campuses. But what does divestment entail, and what arguments have been presented both for and against its role in addressing climate change? This panel discussion will bring together faculty, staff, students, and industry experts to offer nuance and insight to this complex topic. Panelists include:

  • Ashley Cheung, ASM Sustainability Chair
  • Martha Goodell, founder and Managing Partner of Goodell Consulting, LLC and member of Nelson Institute Board of Visitors
  • Pranav Srivastava, Senior Class President (’22)
  • Steph Tai, Professor of Law
  • Paul Wilson, Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Chair of the Department of Engineering Physics

Library Mall
Chalk the sidewalks outside of the Historical Society with Earth Day-inspired art with other students and student orgs such as Food Recovery Network and CLEAN, at Create to Celebrate Earth Day! Decorate the sidewalks to get the campus excited for Earth Week and The Nelson Institute’s Earth Day event on Thursday.

Growing from last year’s conversation, the Wisconsin School of Business will host another roundtable discussion focused on sustainability in business.

7:00 – 8:00 pm – Amplifying BIPOC Voices in Sustainability Series: Food Justice
Union South, Agriculture Room
Hosted by student interns at the Office of Sustainability, this month’s Amplifying BIPOC Voices in Sustainability event will explore food justice in the Madison community and will feature panelists Sam Hsieh from Jumping Spider Farms and Mo Cheeks from Bread and Justice.

The Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies invites you to join us as we explore these concepts and more during the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies Earth Day 2022: Water on the Rise. This day-long community learning event, featuring both in-person and virtual experiences, will examine how communities across the globe are facing, responding to, and mitigating critical water issues.

This hour-long trivia contest will feature questions regarding Earth Day and the environment! There will be multiple prizes as well, so bring your best team and trivia knowledge!

9:00 – 1o:00 am – Outdoor Yoga & Mindfulness + Sustainable Eats Food Truck
Gordon Lawn (rain location: Overture Room, Gordon Dining & Event Center)
Take some time to slow down and relax your mind and body and join the Office of Sustainability and RecWell for an outdoor yoga session focused on mindfulness and mental health. This event will include our Electric Eats food truck handing out free breakfast treats! We encourage participants to bring their own yoga mat or a towel to take full advantage of the session. 

9:30 – 11:00 am – Water@UW Spring Symposium
Virtual + Terrace Event and Kayaking; Register Here
With a theme of “Reconnecting Around Water”, the 2022 Spring Symposium will bring together a range of thinkers from the natural and social sciences, humanities, arts, public policy, and Wisconsin state agencies to share their experiences with water research and the many ways water connects us all. Live CART captioning will be provided for the virtual event. After the Symposium, Water@UW will host an in-person gathering at the Memorial Union Terrace with a catered lunch and optional kayak or pontoon boat outing on Lake Mendota.

9:00 am – 12:00 pm – Campus Cleanup ** POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER**
Join the Office of Sustainability and campus partners for the first annual campus cleanup. Sessions will be staggered and at a variety of campus locations. Just bring yourself, friends, and closed-toed shoes. All other materials will be provided. Update: we will share updated information via our social media (@SustainUW) when we have rescheduled this event.

This year’s WUDStock festival will feature performances from amazing artists like Ginger Root, Alexander Kain, and the Gully Boys. In honor of Earth Day, WUDStock’s Friday concert will feature Alexander Kain, Mavi, and Due Saleh alongside a clothing swap in collaboration with Rewear-It Wisco to raise awareness about fossil fuel divestment and sustainable fashion! Stop by to pick up your FREE TOTE, first come first served while supplies last!

All-Out!
Saturday, 12:00 pm – 6:30 pm
Sunday, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm
All Out! is a FREE weekend of programming organized by Hoofer Ambassadors and focused on introducing UW–Madison students to the outdoors. All Out! is intended for students with minimal experience in the outdoors and who face barriers to accessing outdoor recreational activities. The goal is to provide the knowledge, skills, and community for students to feel comfortable and confident participating in outdoor activities in the future.

It will consist of an in-person hike and community-building activities, virtual discussions, and information sessions. There will be a raffle with prizes, including outdoor gear donated by local businesses: Fjällräven Madison, REI, Fontana Sports, and the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Thank you to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve Committee for providing support for All Out! through a Lakeshore Nature Preserve Student Engagement Grant.
